Roof Replacement in Eldridge, IA

Eldridge lies about 10 miles north of downtown Davenport in Scott County, Iowa. It's small, with 6,726 people in the 2020 Census and about 6,954 in the 2025 estimate. It also has the highest owner-occupancy rate of any town this site covers: 85.9% of its homes are lived in by the people who own them.

Our role is narrow. We're a no-cost referral service that passes your request to one independent roofer and then steps aside. The roofer, not this site, inspects the roof, writes the estimate and signs any contract with you. Roofers may pay a referral fee; you never pay one.

Newer Homes, Higher Values in Eldridge

Eldridge's housing is younger than in many older Iowa towns. In 1980 the city had 1,034 year-round housing units, and only 156 of them dated from 1939 or earlier. Another 243 went up from 1970 to 1974, and 202 from 1975 to 1978. The population has roughly doubled since, from 3,279 in 1980 to 6,726 in 2020.

The median owner-occupied home is valued at $350,500, the highest of the towns on this site and more than twice Davenport's $166,400. Where a house still has its original roof, the job often involves a single layer to strip, though the deck boards still need checking once exposed.

What Eldridge Homeowners Can Request

Every request goes to a single roofer who visits before suggesting a fix.

  • Full replacement. On a younger Eldridge home, roof replacement often comes down to one tear-off, new underlayment with an ice barrier along the eaves, and fresh flashing around vents and pipes.
  • Storm damage. For wind or hail concerns, storm damage roof replacement explains what a roofer looks for after a storm.
  • Metal. Metal roof replacement covers exposed-fastener and standing-seam steel, which differ a lot in price.
  • Shingles. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are an option, not a rule. Some insurers discount them, so check with yours. Details are on the shingle roof replacement page.
  • Repair. A single leak around a skylight or chimney may only need roof repair, not a whole new roof.

Scott County Storms That Reached Eldridge

No National Weather Service report names an Eldridge wind gust from the August 10, 2020 derecho, so the useful facts here are county-level. Scott County was in the federal disaster declaration for that storm (FEMA-4557-DR), and the Davenport airport measured 86 mph that afternoon. In June 2024 the county was added to another federal storm declaration (DR-4796).

Closer to home, a weak (EF-0) tornado on June 24, 2023 tracked about 9.6 miles from near Walcott toward the Davenport airport. The Weather Service summary lists Eldridge among the Scott County places with damage. On September 27, 1959, 7-inch hail fell in Davenport, which the agency calls the largest reported hail ever to hit Scott County.

Eldridge Requires a Permit for Roofing

The city's newcomer letter lists roofing with siding, fencing and other work that needs a permit under city ordinance. Permits come through the City Building Inspector at City Hall, 305 N 3rd Street, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The number is 563-285-4841. Fees are based on the job's value.

Your roofer normally files the permit and books the inspection. Eldridge's form asks for the contractor's name, phone and business address but doesn't mention a license, so run your own checks. Ask for Iowa contractor registration (the state line is 515-242-5871), proof of insurance, written warranties from the shingle maker and the installer, and a local address with references.

High home values don't, on their own, raise a roofing bill in Eldridge; square footage, pitch and material do. Dormers, valleys and a steep pitch push costs up. For a range sized to your house, run the roof cost calculator, or read the roof replacement cost page.

A Local Option for Eldridge

Eldridge has owned and run its own electric, water and sewer utilities for many years, so local service is familiar here. The referral keeps things just as close to home.

  • A single contact. One independent roofer gets your request, so your phone doesn't light up with competing sales calls.
  • Written terms. Insist on an itemized contract that names the materials, the warranty and who pulls the permit.
  • Your claim stays yours. A roofer may record what a storm did, but the claim itself is a matter for you and your insurance company.

Good to Know in Eldridge

Who issues roof permits in Eldridge?

The City Building Inspector, working out of City Hall on N 3rd Street. Roofing is named in the city's permit list, so a re-roof inside city limits goes through that office. Most owners let the roofer apply. Questions about timing or inspections go to City Hall at 563-285-4841.

My address is just outside Eldridge. Who handles the permit?

Land outside any city's limits falls under unincorporated Scott County. There, Scott County Planning & Development issues residential roof permits for $50; its office is at 600 West Fourth Street in Davenport, (563) 326-8643. Check which side of the line your parcel is on.

Do I have to sign my insurance benefits over to a roofer?

No. Under Iowa Code § 515.137A, an assignment of benefits is always your choice. If you sign one, the roofer can only be named as a co-payee on the insurance check, and you can cancel the assignment within five business days after signing.

My Eldridge house isn't very old. Could it still need a new roof?

It can. Age is only one factor; summer wind, winter ice and poor attic ventilation all wear shingles down. Missing tabs, granules piling up in the gutters or water stains on a ceiling are reasons to have a roofer look, whatever year the house was built. The quiz above is a quick first check.
