Storm Damage Is Not Always Obvious

On August 10, 2020, the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities measured an 86 mph gust at the Davenport airport and 68 mph just north of Bettendorf, and Scott County, Iowa ended up in that storm's federal disaster declaration, FEMA-4557-DR. A July 15, 2024 derecho dropped power lines across Brady Street, and on July 29, 2025 the Davenport Municipal Airport measured 59 mph in another derecho.

Wind damage hides well: a shingle can lift, crease and lie back down looking fine from the driveway. Hail is the older story: on September 27, 1959, stones about 7 inches across fell on Davenport, which the Weather Service calls the largest reported hail ever to hit Scott County.

When Homeowners Ask for Storm Roof Replacement

Look from the ground; leave climbing to the roofer.

  • Shingles in the yard. Roofing pieces on the lawn mean something came loose up top.
  • Creased tabs or bare ridge lines. A shingle that flapped may show a crease even after it settles, and ridge caps often go first.
  • Limbs on the roof. A limb that rolled off the roof may still have cracked the deck boards or bent the flashing on its way down.
  • Dents on metal parts. Marks on vents, gutters or downspouts after hail suggest the shingles took hits too.
  • A new ceiling stain. A water spot that appears days after a storm can trace back to a lifted shingle.

Rough Numbers for Storm Roof Replacement

Storm work is priced like any other roof job. What your policy pays depends on its terms and your insurer, and the deductible stays yours. These published figures are not quotes.

Inspection, Estimate, Install

  1. Stay safe first. Keep clear of downed lines and stay off the roof; take photos from the ground.
  2. Send one request. Use the form or call (563) 555-0188, and we hand it to a single independent roofer near Davenport.
  3. Let the roofer document it. Expect photos, measurements and notes you can keep for your own records.
  4. Decide about a claim yourself. Whether to file, and what to accept, is between you and your insurance company.
  5. Compare the written estimate. Once you agree on a scope, the roofer pulls the City permit and schedules the job.

Why the Process Matters

After a big storm, a short pause before signing pays off. Within city limits, have the roofer show you its City of Davenport contractor license, and get a yes on who pulls the City permit (Public Works, 563-326-7745). Check Iowa contractor registration at 515-242-5871, and ask for proof of insurance, a local address, references and written warranties.

Working Through the Claim

Your claim belongs to you and your insurer. A roofer can photograph and write up the damage, but can't speak for you. Iowa Code § 103A.71 bars a home contractor from acting as your go-between with the insurance company, and from advertising or promising a rebate on your deductible. The roofer must give you a written notice of these limits in bold type, and a contract that breaks the rules is void. Only a licensed public adjuster or your own attorney can negotiate the claim for you.

Signing your claim money over to a roofer is always optional in Iowa. If you do, Iowa Code § 515.137A lets the roofer appear only as a co-payee, and you keep five business days from signing to undo it. Iowa Code chapter 555A adds a door-sale rule: sign a deal worth $25 or more anywhere but the seller's own business, and you have until midnight of the third business day to back out. Contractor concerns go to the Iowa Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division (888-777-4590); insurance questions go to the Iowa Insurance Division (877-955-1212).

Quick Answers

How soon after a storm should I have the roof checked?

Sooner is better, once it's safe. A broken seal under a shingle tends to get worse with the next storm. Your policy may also set a time limit for reporting a loss, so read it or ask your agent what applies. An inspection arranged through us costs you nothing.

Will the roofer deal with my insurance adjuster for me?

No. Iowa law bars a roofer from representing you or negotiating your claim. The roofer can document the damage, and you can share that record with your insurer. If you want someone to argue the claim on your side, look to a licensed public adjuster or your own attorney.

Can a roofer cover my deductible?

No. Iowa bars home contractors from promising, or even advertising, that they'll give back some or all of your deductible, and a contract built on that promise is void. Treat an offer like that as a reason to walk away, and report it to the Attorney General's office at 888-777-4590.

Are impact-resistant shingles worth asking about?

Worth a conversation. Class 4 impact-rated shingles and the FORTIFIED roof standard are options, not requirements. Some insurance companies lower premiums for one or both, so check with your agent about your own policy before you settle on a material.
